If you are getting excited about planning your next adventure, you’ll be happy to learn that the library has current editions of the well-respected Lonely Planet guidebooks. Grouped together in the New Books Area on the main level, in the call number range G153.4 L6, you will find print copies that represent more than one hundred countries from Argentina to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, and regions such as Southern Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the South Pacific. You can access online copies of Lonely Planet guidebooks as well for places from Florida to Kyoto.  If your travel plans are closer to home, you will also find titles like USAWashington, Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, and Hiking in the Rocky Mountains.

For each title in the series, there is a link from the library record to the Lonely Planet website to access the most current travel information and facts. For example, the link to the USA title offers articles, such as “Christmas in New York City: 5 Dos and Don’ts;” special thematic focus areas called “Native Encounters,” “Top Things to Do in the USA,” “The Wild West,” “Road Trippin,’” and “Adventure Travel;” and general information about places to stay, restaurants, and activities, among many other topics.

You can search for the Lonely Planet guidebooks using the keyword phrase “lonely planet” in addition to the desired country or region, or to browse through all of the library’s titles, you can search with the phrase “lonely planet publications.”

Want to expand your search beyond Lonely Planet? The library also has online access to Fodor’s, Rick Steves’ and many other guidebooks. For the broadest search, use the keyword "guidebooks" in addition to the country or region, or the phrase “travel and description.” A search for Italy guidebooks, for example, will retrieve titles like Eat Smart in Sicily: How to Decipher the Menu, Know the Market Foods & Embark on a Tasting Adventure, and Rome: An Oxford Archaeological Guide.

Have fun exploring our travel guidebook collection and Bon Voyage!
